European Parliament Unveils its First Holocaust Memorial

January 26, 2023MeetingXavier

On 26 January 2023, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola together with President of the State of Israel Isaac Herzog unveiled a permanent Holocaust memorial in the European Parliament in front of its plenary chamber: “The Refugee”, an art piece by Felix Nussbaum, who perished in the Shoah. The piece reflects the fear and desperation of the artist on the eve of WWII and a grim reality: for the Jew, there is no refuge. The series of commemoration events in the European Parliament concluded with the moving testimony of Holocaust survivor Alberto Israel.

In 2017, the European Jewish Congress, a member of WGAS Advisory Board, dedicated this video to honour Nussbaum’s life and work.
